The lecture, titled \u201cDialogue with Development Maverick Mechai Viravaidya on Spreading Consciousness in Education and Health\u201d, featured Khun Mechai Viravaidya, founder of the Population and Community Development Association or PDA, and Dr Ravi Kannan, Director of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, whilst Nobel Prize economist Prof Amartya Sen joined via video link from his home in Boston. Joe Horn-Phathanothai, CEO of Strategy613 and organiser of the event, moderated the lecture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3579 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0445_0-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0445_0-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0445_0-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0445_0.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>In his opening address Khun Anand recalled the previous lectures, which included luminary guest speakers such as Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda, Nobel Prize winning chemist Sir Greg Winter, OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria, and LSE President Baroness Minouche Shafik,<\/strong>\u00a0and mentioned how delightful it was that this Amartya Sen Lecture featured a speaker from Thailand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Khun Mechai,<\/strong>\u00a0in his captivating lecture, shared many lessons learned during the past fifty years working on five main areas of development, namely: reducing births, reducing deaths, reducing dependence, reducing poverty, and reducing ignorance.\u00a0 His efforts are marked by an openness to work with unorthodox partners, and a unique can-do attitude characterised by his motto:\u00a0<strong>\u201cTake no as a question\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3581 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/07_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0665_0-399x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/07_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0665_0-399x600.jpg 399w, https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/07_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0665_0.jpg 532w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Khun Joe\u00a0<\/strong>commented that Khun Mechai\u2019s approach was a unique combination of street smart and academic grounding.\u00a0 As a pioneer in several areas of social development, Khun Mechai has often had to resort to unconventional methods in order to bring about change.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3582 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/05_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0716_0-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/05_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0716_0-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/05_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0716_0-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bangkokagenda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/05_6Mar-ASLS-C1_0716_0.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Ravi Kannan<\/strong>\u00a0shared his perspective of how, in building his revolutionary cancer center, his challenge was to convince the poor to have trust in his work. In order to do that he had to empower the local community in Assam, a poor and neglected region at the foot of the Himalayas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof Sen\u00a0<\/strong>reflected on the teachings of the Buddha in the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta in relation to family planning.\u00a0 He pointed out that it was important to educate the population to strengthen their ability to use reason in determining their choice in such matters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
